ELLIS - RICHARDSONE

Sarah Edmondson Sun Apr 16 21:12:11 2000
I am trying to determine the burial place (as well as find more information about) of Elizabeth ELLIS (wife of Gabriel ELLIS) who died in Savannah in 1848 and Julia A. ELLIS who died in Savannah in 1847.
In the Register of Deaths, Savannah, GA, 1848-1853, p. 13 is this entry: Buried 1848: 29 Sep. ELLIS, Elizabeth, Age: 40; b. SoCa; Disease: Unknown; Dr. RICHARDSONE; Hull St./Jackson Ward; Non-resident.
In the Register of Deaths in Savannah, GA, Vol. V, 1833-1847, p. 256 is this entry: Aug. 21, 1847, ELLIS, Julia A., Age: 9 mos., Disease: Hooping cough; Dr. RICHARDSONE, Broughton St; Non-resident.

I am hoping that these remains may have been moved to Bonaventure or Laurel Grove and that I will be able to find these graves. Is there a list of those buried in these cemeteries? Does anyone do lookups? Elizabeth ELLIS' husband died in Colleton Coiunty in 1855; I have also been unable to determine his burial place. The family had means at that time so that Gabriel could have been taken to Savannah for burial. I am also interested in the connection with Dr. RICHARDSONE, as one of Elizabeth's children named a daughter Ruth Richardsone ELLIS; we have found no family connection with this name other than this attending physician. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

SULLIVAN

Laura Sullivan Lopata Mon May 8 17:45:26 2000
I am desperately searching for information about my great-grandfather, Michael J. SULLIVAN. Here's what I know: according to family lore he was born on a ship in Boston Harbor in either 1847,1849,1850, or 1852, depending on which source you are looking at. In the 1860 census he shows up in the Sisters of Mercy Catholic Orphan Asylum in Savannah, along with a younger brother Jeremiah. Michael is 13 and Jeremiah is 11. I suspect one or both of their parents died of yellow fever during the epidemic of 1854 and 1855. Can someone help me with the death index for Chatham County for those years? I didn't know there was one. I suspect his father's name was also Michael SULLIVAN but don't have substantiated proof. Also in that same orphanage are three SULLIVAN sisters: Mary, Ellen, and Bridgett. We know so little about Michael and no one ever heard about any sisters, but if you put these kids together their ages are 11, 12, 13, 14, and 16 so I am guessing they are siblings. What I am looking for is anyone who knows anything about the orphanage in general, anyone who knows anyone who was or had ancestors in the orphanage, any information on any of these five SULLIVANs, and any information I can get about my great-grandfather's later life. He went on to become a watchman on a river steamer on the Savannah between there and Augusta. I would also welcome general information on the river and rive traffic between 1865 and 1922 when he died. There's also a family legend that he joined the Civil War after running away from the orphanage. Thank you for any help you can give me! Laura :-)

HOLMES - KELL

Stephen Holmes Wed Jun 7 09:09:27 2000
I am looking for details of the parents of James HOLMES (1778 - 1826) who married Mary KELL. They lived the latter years of their life in Sunbury, Liberty Co. and had business dealings in Savannah. The IGI states that there was a James HOLMES born in Savannah in 1779 and his father was a Samuel James HOLMES. Does anyone have any details of the parents of this birth or any marriage in Savannah prior to 1779 involving a Samuel HOLMES. There was a Rev. John HOLMES in Savannah at about the same time who may have been related. He was a Whig Anglican Minister involved in the Revolution, who died on March 20, 1784.

Am looking for anyone researching the WHITE family. I'm looking for anyone that can help me find out anyting about my gggrandfather, Joseph McKee WHITE. I was told he left Savannah at an early age (18) which would have been around 1833. Story has it that his father died when he was young and his mothers married a sea captain that he did not approve of. So, he took his inheritance and his slaves and moved to Pulaski County, which is today, Laurens County, GA. I know he came from a rather well off family and I've been told he had a sister named Dovey. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. I can also be reached at lelindalou@aol.com.
