LOW

Kelly Low Wed Jan 3 21:11:39 2001
I am trying to find documentation of the birth of John LOW, son of John LOW and Eliza LOW (nee GREEN) of Savannah Georgia. John (the son) was born about 1862 or 1863. His father John was serving on the CSS Alabama at the time. Eliza died within 1 or 2 years of John's birth. Our understanding is that he was raised by relatives until emigrating to New Zealand in the 1870s or 1880s.
Do you have any suggestions on where I should start looking? thanks very much, Kelly Low

BURGOYNE

Pat Bajwa Fri Feb 2 22:06:00 2001
I an looking for the above surname in possible varient spellings. Lewis H. BURGOYNE was a French fur trapper and he married Sarah. I believe that she was a Native American.
From what I understand, today the area just north of Savannah is in Chatham County. In 1796-1803 when Sarah was born, it was a French settlement and was called Purysville it was still a part of S.C. at the time.
What I would like to have is some information on, is the name of the French ships and the url for the passenger lists of those that entered the Savannah and Charleston Harbors during that time. I would like to know more about the settlers and Native Americans in that time and place.
Sarah was from a splinter band known as "Mushroom Indians". They had to join another tribe in order to survive. I do not believe that was the name of the band but that they harvested mushrooms as a food source rather than for rituals as did their Southwestern counterparts. Sarah eventually ended up alone withe 7 children by 1850 Clark County Ms. She died in Arkansas.
If anyone is willing to let me know more abaut the French and Native Americans pre Chatham County, I will be most greatful.
Thank you very much in advance. Pat

I am trying to trace my wife's family. Family lore has it that their family is connected with Sir William BLACKSTONE, the English barrister. Her g-gfather, William Henry BLACKSTONE, was born in Chatham Co., GA 12/4/1847 and died in AR. He married Martha Jane ADKINS, also born in GA around 1855. They married--we believe--in Salem, AR.
Their daughter Emma Samantha BLACKSTONE (b. 1/27/1883--Salem, AR; d. 1/28/1964--Ft. Worth, TX) married William Alexander SEARCY -- again in AR we believe before they settled in Texas.
I am looking for information concerning William Henry's father, was that William Harvey BLACKSTONE (b. 1823 in AL) who married Mary Jane PERRY? Was William HARVEY the son of James Harvey BLACKSTONE(b. 1805, GA) who married Johanna PILGRIM? Any information on this family line would be appreciated.

FLEETWOOD - MORGAN - THOMPSON - GROSS

Nancy Fleetwood Miller Wed Mar 7 07:36:28 2001
Green FLEETWOOD (1810-1856) married Mary MORGAN (from Effingham County) in 1832 in Chatham County. They had 6 children: (1) Thomas M. FLEETWOOD married Laura WHITE, (2) James M. FLEETWOOD married Philitia METZGER/Cornelia THOMPSON, (3) William Henry FLEETWOOD married Laura COOPER/Catherine Elizabeth GROSS, (4) Mary Lucretia FLEETWOOD married George Galpin WILSON, (5) George S. FLEETWOOD married? Elizabeth COHEN, and (6) Laura FLEETWOOD married William T. GIBSON.

Green's occupation was that of a ship captain/harbor pilot operating out of Savannah. He owned a home on Columbia Square and a plantation on Whitemarsh Island.
Green's only known brother, John FLEETWOOD (1811-1859), was also a pilot in Savannah. John married Mary or Margaret THOMPSON in Chatham County in 1840. They had no children.
Green and John Fleetwood were listed in the 1820 & 1821 Land Lotteries as "orphans." These families are buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery and Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah.

The earliest record I have found puts Green in Savannah in 1829, however, that is as far back as I have been able to go. Could really use some help trying to find the parents of Green and John FLEETWOOD.
Would like to learn more about these families and the "life of the mariner" in early Georgia. Will gladly share information. <>

MOORE

Ronald Wilson Thu Mar 8 20:29:14 2001
Looking for information on John MOORE who died in November of 1861. The following is an excerpt from a book on the History of The Tugalo Baptist Association. "John MOORE enlisted as a Private and entered the service of the Confederate States in 1861, and died in Savannah, Georgia in November following. The writer remembers hearing a report soon after his death, that such was the reputation he had made as a minister during his brief life in Savannah, that a delegation was sent from the First Baptist Church, requesting that his body be turned over to the Church for burial, which was granted." It seems to me that the Church making this request was the First Baptist Church of Savannah. Is there anyone who has a book on the cemeteries of Savannah? I would sure love to find out where John is buried. He seemed to have been a highly respected man. He is my wife's Great Great Grandfather.
Thanks for any help you can give. Ronald

COPELIN / COPELAND

Charlie Copeland Grafton Tue Mar 27 06:12:57 2001
I would like to correspond with anyone who is a descendant of James COPELIN / COPELAND, born approximately 1775 in Bryan/Chatham/Effingham County, GA. He married Dorcas ROBERTS. Their children were Martha Ellen, (Patsy - married Sanuel HENDERSON); Mary Ann, (Polly - married James REEVES); Isabel (married Peter HELVESTON); Isham (married Rebecca WELLS). James was given a land grant on Three Rivers Lake, (MS Territory) for 640 acres in 1797. The area later became Baldwin Co., AL. and then Washington Co., AL. By 1805 the land belonged to the "Heirs of J. COPELIN." I have no proof that James ever physically lived on the property. However, there is proof that Dorcas did live there. So, I suppose it is possibe that he died in GA., and not in AL. Some say Dorcas was part Indian. I have no proof of this either. Who were James's parents? Who were Dorcas's parents? I would like to compare/share information with anyone from this family; however, at this time I have little to offer. I do know that this James COPELIN / COPELAND is the grandfather of James COPELAND, the noted outlaw from the Pascagoula River Valley, Jackson Co., MS, who was executed in Perry Co., MS in 1857. I have seen the COPELIN / COPELAND name spelled a variety of ways - even within the same family. Any information in the research of this family would be greatly appreciated. Charlie COPELAND GRAFTON (770-228-6249; 770-227-6266 fax)
