HAYNES

D. Grant Haynes Sun Jan 2 12:06:30 2000
My great-great grandfather was John Milledge Haynes of Coweta County. He joined the Confederate Army of Tennessee in May 1862, I believe it was, and was later taken prisoner in Kentucky. He died in 1863 in a Jackson, Mississippi Confederate hospital after a prisoner-of-war exchange. His wife was Elizabeth Phillips Haynes. There was a large family of children, one of whom was my great-grandfather, James Thomas Haynes, who lived all his life in the Moreland area of Coweta County. I have never been able to find anything about where John Milledge Haynes originiated or who his parents were. Anyone having any information about this man who signed an "x" when he joined the Confederate Army could write me at my email address.

BALL - DAVIS

John R. Davis Tue Jan 11 12:12:02 2000
I am attempting to learn something of my grandmother's family. She was Mary Cornelia Ball b.Oct 22, 1886; d.January 16, 1915; m. Robert Lee Davis February 1904. She died when my father, Tollison Kirby Davis, was only six, and he knows very little about his mother's family. He believes that his grandfather Ball (father of Mary Cornelia) operated a resteraunt on the Courthouse Square around 1915. He thinks that his grandfather was called "Bloomer" Ball, but does not know if this was a given name or nickname. He believes that his mother had at least two brothers Edward Ball and James Ball, and at least two sisters Maggie (married a Bilbo) and Lenna (married a Spellman). Would appreciate any information anyone can provide.

HUNTER - JOHNSON - COLE - ABERNATHY - PITTS - RAGSDALE - HARDY - RUSSELL - BAILEY - BEAVERS - ELDER - ADDY - BENTON - BURCH - SIMS

Mary Abernathy Meyer Fri Jan 21 17:51:25 2000
Re: The John Hunter and Widow Cole "blended" family in 1850

John Hunter (b Nov. 8, 1801 in Newberry Co. SC) married Abigail Johnson (b January 7, 1803 in Newberry Co. SC) on December 30, 1822. Their first seven children were born in Newberry Co. SC:
1) Eliza Ellen Hunter b 1822 married Mr. Russell
2) Fielder Franklin Hunter b 1825 married Frances Jane Bailey
3) William Johnson Hunter b 1828 married Jane Cole
4) Sara Elizabeth Hunter b 1829 married Jim Beavers
5) James David (Jim) Hunter b 1832 married Rebecca Jane Elder
6) Holly Ann Hunter b 1833 married William Bailey
7) Mary Susan Hunter b 1835 married Harrison Addy
Their last four children were born in Coweta Co., GA:
8) Nathan Young Hunter b 1836 married Martha Benton
9) John Alfred Hunter b ? m Susan Rebecca Burch on 11/24/1870
10) Richard L. Hunter b 1840 married Beatrice Sims
11) Thopmas Rollen Hunter b April 4, 1844 m ?

Abigail died January 18, 1847 in Turin (Coweta Co.) GA and was buried at Tranquil Cemetery. About 1848-1849 John married Widow Cole whose given name was Susan. Susan had 2 or 3 daughters:
Emily Cole b about 1837, Mary P. Cole b about 1839...and the subject of this query: Caroline b about 1842. In the 1850 census, Caroline was listed as 8 years old, but the enumerator did not list Caroline's last name. Was she Susan's daughter (Caroline Cole?) or Abigail's daughter (Caroline Hunter?) If Abigail's daughter, she would have been born between #10 Richard b 1840 and #11 Thomas b 1844.

In the 1850 census, John and Susan had a three-month old baby listed as Sarah R. B. Hunter. According to an entry in the COWETA COUNTY CHRONICLES FOR 100 YEARS by Mary G. Jones and Mary Reynolds [1928, Stein Printing, Atlanta, GA, p. 627 "Hunter Genealogy"]: "John Hunter married a second time to a Mrs. Cole and they had two daughters, Arbesener and Margaret." Arbezena (or Arbesnor) Hunter married W. C. Ragsdale, and Margaret Hunter married T. C. Hardy. My genealogy cohorts and I are wondering if Sarah R. B. Hunter and Arbezena (or Arbesnor) Hunter are the same person. Susan's age in 1850 was listed as 42, and she was born in SC (about 1808).

There is a discrepancy in my notes regarding the name of John and Abigail's 10th child: I have him listed both as Richard L. Hunter, and in another place I have Reuben L. One could be a typographical error, or perhaps I read the census enumerator's writing as Reuben and later determined the name was Richard. Can someone confirm or deny that the Hunter son born October 3, 1840 was named Richard (or Reuben?) L. Hunter? He married Beatrice Sims.

I would like to know Susan's maiden name. I am particularly interested in learning more about her deceased husband Mr. Cole. Where was he from and who were his parents? What caused his death? Was Jane Cole who married William Johnson Hunter (b 1828) related to him?
Abigail Johnson's parents were John Johnson and Rebecca Pitts. John Hunter's parents were William Hunter and Sarah Mary Abernathy. I would like to know about John Hunter's religious affiliations. I am related to John Hunter through the Abernathy line, and I am trying to make a COLE connection. John Hunter is buried at Tranquil Cemetery in Turin (Coweta Co.) GA.

If any of this info. is erroneous, I would appreciate being corrected. Thank you for any info. or insight. Mary in TX Reply to meyerma@webtv.net or slickice@tca.net or Mary Meyer, 515 Helena, Bryan, TX 77801.

LANGDON - MARTIN - BUCKLEY

Martyn A. Martin Tue Feb 1 10:31:24 2000
Records, Coweta County Superior Court, March Term 1842, reveal that John LANGDON had loaned slave woman, Nance, to his daughter, Nancy LANGDON MARTIN, who was a widow in 1801. Her children: John L. MARTIN, Catherine MARTIN m. Henry ENGLISH; Eleanor MARTIN m. Jonathan NUTT; Morris (sic) [Maurice] MARTIN; May Martin m. Joseph FROST. Nancy LANGDON Martin m/2nd Hiram BUCKLEY; no issue this marriage. She died 1819. H. BUCKLEY died July 1831. Nancy LANGDON and her husband, Joseph MARTIN, were my ggg-grandparents. They lived in Wilkes County, GA at the time of Joseph's death in 1801. My gg-grandfather, Maurice MARTIN, moved to Baldwin County, GA about 1814. I lost track of Maurice's brother and sister's. My question is: " Why did the Coweta County Superior Court in March, 1842, have this entry on John LANGDON loaning a slave to Nancy? Consider that Nancy had passed away 22 years prior and Hiram, Nancy's 2nd husband, had passed away 11 years prior to this event. Also, Nancy's father, John LANGDON, passed away in 1826 in Wilkes County, GA. This could have been to resolve a dispute between Nancy's children. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in un-raveling this puzzle.

MITCHELL - KNOWLES - JONES - HOBGOOD

Herb Mitchell Wed Feb 2 23:41:57 2000
I'm trying to determine the relationship between these two men. William was born 2-19-1828 in Henry Co and married Nancy Turner, b 1832, in 1849 in Henry Co.
Henry was born 7-30-1829 in Coweta Co and married Martha A.L. Bean, b 2-2-1833 in Henry Co, on 1-2-1850 in Randolph Co, AL.
William's first 3 children (M.A. - dau, Mark F - son, and I.G. - dau) were born in Georgia. the remaining 7 (that I know of) were all born in Alabama after 1854.
I know the two men are related in some manner, as William T's obiturary was in papers of Hicksey Ann Mitchell's after her death in 1915, and she is the daughter of Henry Thomas Mitchell.
Henry Thomas may also have a sister, Sarah Ann, born 5-18-1832 in GA, married David M. Bean in 1849. David M. Bean is a brother of Martha A.L. Bean, who married Henry.
I have information that indicates that John J Mitchell is Henry Thomas' father (Asenath Jones is his mother), and that James Tolen Mitchell is William T.'s father (mother Elizabeth White)
Any asistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Herb hr_mitchell@yahoo.com http://www.geocities.com/hr_mitchell

FULMER - PITTS - CROMER - BENTON

Mark Conger Fri Feb 18 20:24:44 2000
I have several tin type pictures that were in an old album that belonged to Catherine Drusilla CROMER. Her mother was Martha Ann FULMER of Coweta County. I can identify a large number of the people because the photos are marked. However there are some that I must speculate on. I would like it if anyone that has relationships to the FULMER, CROMER, or PITTS families would let me email a digital copy of the photos with my speculative identification. I believe some of these people are Jacob FULMER, George CROMER, Susanna Fulmer PITTS, Giles PITTS, and Mary FULMER. I also have a picture of twins that I believe are the twin sons of Giles PITTS. All of these people lived in Coweta County in the 1850 and later time frame. I believe these photos are about 1850-1870 time frame. My basis for that is that the owner of the photo album left Coweta County in 1872 at the age of 11 for Texas. I think many of the photos came to her possession from her mother.

I also have a great deal of letters from 1850-1900 written by these families before, during and after the war. Many mention deaths, marriages, births. I am in the process of preparing a book on the John BENTON, Jr. Family, to which all these families have ties. Can anyone help me with the photo IDs? Your help is very appreciated.
Mark Conger

REYNOLDS - PROCTOR

Jerry Allen Sat Mar 18 05:00:16 2000
Amanda REYNOLDS PROCTOR was the wife of John E. PROCTOR. Born in SC abt. 1830, she and John are found in Tallapoosa Co., AL in 1860 with children William Henry, Marcus D., Elizabeth and Mary. After John died in the Civil War, the children reportedly went to live with REYNOLDS aunts in Coweta Co., who would have been Amanda's sisters. I am hoping to find someone who is researching the REYNOLDS or PROCTOR lines and who can tell me who Amanda's parents were and where they came from in SC.
