SIMS - MARCUS - BURNETT

Angela P. Williams Wed Oct 2 19:59:43 2002
An African American man named Benjamin (John) MARCUS married my presumed Native American gggrandmother named Mary (SIMS) BURNETT in Ga.1903. To this union 7 children were born. In the 1920 census this family is listed as mulattos living on a farm in the city of Grantville. On near by farms other MARCUSes were listed as mulattos also. If anyone out there can assiat me in my search it would be greatly appreciated.

HATTAWAY / HATAWAY / HADDAWAY - TEAL / TEEL

Erin Leongomez Tue Oct 8 13:04:12 2002
I am looking for any information on my ancestors, Lacy HATTAWAY (1796-1868) and Elizabeth TEAL (1795-1884). Both were probably born in Pitt or Anson Co., NC, married in Jasper Co., GA in 1825, and were in the 1830 census of Campbell Co., Ga. They are buried at Friendship Baptist in Campbell (now Fulton Co.), GA. Almost all of the deeds I have of their land say that it was originally Coweta, so I am interested in whether they bought the land or got it through a land grant and any families that they might be connected with. Many thanks!

DOSTER

Linda Heath Wed Oct 9 00:01:34 2002
My great-great-great Grandparents, Thomas DOSTER and Deborah DOSTER moved to Coweta Co. with their children in 1827. Deborah DOSTER was a charter member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Thomas and Deborah both died after 1850 and before 1860 and are believed to be buried in this church cemetery. I need a date of death and confirmation that they are buried there. Thanks so much for your help. God Bless.

MURPHY

PK Murphy Fri Oct 11 19:32:30 2002
I'm hoping to find out whether "natural guardian" always meant "parent" in Coweta Co. in 1838. My query comes from the following:

Coweta Co., GA, Inferior Court
January 1838
		Court Minute Book A, pp 154, 155
Georgia Coweta Inferior Court sitting for ordinary pruposes January
Coweta County adjourned Term 1838.
It appearing to the Court that Richard M. MURPHY (a minor) is possessed of a considerable Estate in right of his wife Parthenia Ann MURPHY formerly Parthenia Ann DEMPSEY and having no legal guardian. It is therefore on motion ordered by the Court that his natural guardian John MURPHY be appointed his legal guardian on his giving bond on the sum of one thousand dollars with William Nimmons and Willis Kilgore securities and that Letters of Guardianship issue according to law in such cases made and provided

I think it's logical that "natural guardian" meant "father" in this case, but "natural guardian" has also meant "grandparent" and even "sibling" in other jurisdictions.

Sound advice on this point would be be much appreciated.

Best regards,
PK Murphy in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

As of now we have no documented proof that his parents were Barthalomew and Martha MURPHY.Word handed down by families are where this source comes from at this time. One of JACKSONS brothers is named MARTIN BARTHALOMEW. So many records were destroyed during the war! JACKSON lived and raised his family in Jackson/Winn parishes in Louisiana. He fought for the south and afterward mov ed to Pike Co.in Arkansas and died there in 1912. So far I have found no record of them between Georgia and Louisiana.Maybe they traveled straight through along with family and friends? CHANDLER - STAPLES

Carla Bedgood Tue Nov 12 08:05:08 2002
Hi, I am doing research on my husband's family. His grand mother had a half-sister named Georgia Ann Hill STAPLES (born 1852, died 1934). In 1870, she married a Joseph Alvin CHANDLER (son of Clark CHANDLER and Mirium Marianna "Mary" BRAZELL) in Coweta Co. It appears that most of their children were born in Coweta County and Joseph died in 1894 and is buried in the Bethlehem Bapt. Church Cemetery (at least from the records I have access to, never been there myself). It appears that Georgia then moved to Texas to live with her daughter Margie that had married a Phillip D. JENKINS.

I am looking for any information on descendents of Joseph Alvin CHANDLER and Georgia Ann Hill STAPLES and also any information on any CHANDLERs that are buried in the Bethlehem Bapt. Church Cemetery.
Thanks. Carla Bedgood - bedgood@aol.com

GOODWIN / GOODWYN / GOODRUN

Kathie Donahue Tue Nov 19 01:53:34 2002
Hampton (Ham, Hanlin) GOODWIN (b 1835 VA or GA d aft 1910 Coweta Co., GA) m. abt 1858 to Matilda (b. 1840 GA d aft 1910 Coweta Co., GA) and had children:
Quintus GOODWIN b 1859 GA
Ella GOODWIN b 1863 GA
Abram GOODWIN b 1864 GA
Johnie GOODWIN b 1871 GA
Carrie GOODWIN b 1874 GA
Perly GOODWIN b 1877 GA
Victoria F. GOODWIN b 1880 GA married Ira (?) WORTHAM.

Ham and Matilda appeared in the 1870 through 1910 Coweta censuses; consistently in the 806 District and at Newnan. Victoria and Mr. WORTHAM were in the census in Coweta through 1930. They are always listed as Mulatto or Black (most often mulatto and are probably mixed Creek Indian or Cherokee with some West Indian).

I have not checked the Slave Schedules for 1850 and 1860 yet but my searches of the regular schedules for those years has been, so far, nil. So I don't know if they were in Coweta Co., before 1870.

Any information will be greatly appreciated. Of course, we are especially anxious to find the maiden name of Matilda. They are always living among the NORTHs, CARMICHALs, HAYNES(NIE), HILL, etc., families.
Thanks, Kathie Donahue

P. is our Grandmother Willie Sapheria COOPER.

John Mitchell & wife Minnie are shown on the 1880 Coweta Co. Census in Dist. 693, Page 541, next door to Madesen THOMAS, age 34, wife Elizabeth, age 35, born in Ohio, & Willie COOPER, age 14, step-daughter. We know that Elizabeth did marry Alford Madesen THOMAS on 1 Nov. 1871 in Troup Co. GA. John Mitchell married Minnie TURBYFIELD in 1879.

They moved to Campbell Co. where they raised 8 children. They died there also but we don't know where they are buried. The 1900 - 1910- 1920 Campbell Co. Some of the TURBYFIELD's also were shown in house-hold with them & a Grandson, Bruce ELLER, was on the 1920 Census with them.

JONES - VINES

Jeff Bishop Sat Dec 28 23:07:00 2002
Hello. I grew up in Coweta County and several of my ancestors were pioneers there. I worked for the Times-Herald for a number of years and Winston Skinner is a friend of mine.

I'm looking for information on the JONES family of Senoia, who lived there at the turn of the 20th century. Family members include Zelma JONES (who amrried a Martin), Geneva, and Rose. Earlier members of the family include Zelma's uncle, and my ancestor, William Lawrence JONES, who married Cora Ella (JACOBS? or FRY?). They moved to Haralson Co., GA and were my great-great grandparents.

Am also interested in anything you may have one Mary Ann VINES of Coweta Co. who married Stephen POLLARD and moved to Haralson Co. She was my great-great-great grandmother and she was from Coweta.

Also, Abijah LATHAM, a Confederate Cavalry member who is bured at the Canongate Golf Course, is an ancestor of mine.

Any help would be appreciated, particularly on the Jones line, which I know very little about. Thanks.
Jeff Bishop
