McDOWELL - RILEY / REILLY

Barbara Curtis Sat Nov 18 23:17:57 2006
Seeking information on my McDOWELL - RILEY line. In the 1880 census they were living in Mamakating.

Eliza McDOWELL age 64 b. in Ireland
James RILEY Son in law age 25 b. in Ireland Farmer
Ellen RILEY Daughter age 21 b. in Brooklyn, NY
Robert grandson age 4 b. in Middletown
Mary Elizabeth "Minnie" 3 b. in Middletown
George infant 3 mos. b. in Mamakating
Eliza McDOWELL Daughter b. in Michigan in 1953

The REILLY sons relocated to Middletown. Robert J. REILLY was killed in a train accident in 1898. His brother George married and had a barbershop in Mamakating, his wife lived in Middletown (Margaret) as did he after 1925.

Minnie attended Thrall School of Nursing in Middletown and graduated about 1897? She married John O'NEILL in 1906 and lived in Brooklyn in 1910 and Manhattan after that.

James RILEY worked for Decker's Hotel in the 1900 and 1910 census'. His wife, Ellen or Ella, died in 1891. She and her children are buried in the Bloomingburg Cemetery along with a McDOWELL.

I know that Eliza J. McDOWELL (Daughter) died Sep 25, 1888 at 37 years of age. I have a funeral card. I don't know if she's buried in the RILEY plot or if it's her father born in Ireland in 1812 or both. He died before 1880 as Eliza is a widow. The census does indicate that Eliza was insane. Where would she have been hospitalized if that was required?

Any suggestions/insights/information greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Barbara
Edmonds, WA

His brother, John J DILLON, was both the publisher and owner of an important nationally distributed newspaper out ot NYC, "The Rural New Yorker", from the early 1900's till his death approx 1950.

My grandfather was named Thomas for his father and operated the farm after the death of his father till the early 1960's at which time he became ill with cancer, stopped farming and was forced financially to sell portions of the land.

BROSS - BARLOW

Regina Haring Mon Sep 11 18:44:51 2006
In a previous message I asked for helping in identifying the adopted child Katy BROSS. I have since been told that she was born in 1858, and so is not our gr-grandmother who was born in 1840.

Henry BROSS (1806-alive 1860) married Hannah BARLOW (1814-1879) Resided Ten Mile River. Hannah's will, dated 8 March 1879 at Tusten Township, Sullivan Co., mentions an adopted daughter Katy BROSS.

Our missing gr-grandma was Catherine Jane BROSS (HARING) and we were wondering if she could be this "Katy BROSS". Does anyone have access to Hannah Barlow BROSS's will that might have more information? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

GRAY - HUDLER

Judy Kimball Sun Jan 22 12:16:35 2006
John W. (could be Wesley) GRAY b. 8 July 1823 probably NY & wife Mary Magdalene HUDLER, b. Oct. 31, 1809 in Ulster County (now Sullivan) had 3 children, James W., Earnest B., & Florinda b. in Fallsburg beginning 1844. They removed to Newark, Ohio in 1854. John was the youngest of 8 children. Have gathered & evaluated extensive NY GRAY data in an attempt to identify my John W. GRAY's parentage conclusively. His 1878 obit indicates his parents were John & Mary GRAY. I have a hunch that William GRAY of Liberty, Sullivan may be his uncle. I would be most happy to converse and share my GRAY research material, additionally I have extensive data on the Mary M. HUDLER line back to the early 1700's.

CARR - RAMSAY - DOBBS

Colleen Wed Jan 18 07:29:58 2006
I am looking for several graves:
1) John RAMSAY, father of Hugh RAMSAY and John RAMSAY. Hugh and his wife Charlotte (PINCKNEY) RAMSAY are buried in Old Fulton Cemetery in Ferndale but I cannot find the father John.

2) Charlotte DOBBS. Charlotte is the daughter of Hugh and Charlotte RAMSAY. She lived with them after her husband died in Virginia during the Civil War. I would assume she is buried near a child since she is not near her parents and her husband is buried in Virginia

3) William and Ellitheah CARR, father and mother of Whitman CARR. Whitman, his wife Margery and their sons Joseph and Sanford and families are buried in the Brookside Cemetery near Harris. They died before 1830.

DENNISTON - PURVIS - CHILDS - WHITTAKER

susan denniston calderone Sun Jan 8 17:57:30 2006
I am searching for confirmation that Benjamin Franklin DENNISTON (b. abt 1850, died 1922) is the son of Enoch DENNISTON and Julia (?). Benjamin was married to Alice PURVIS and together they had 5 children live to adulthood - all born in Sulivan County. Enoch's dob, dod, pob and pod are unknown. Julia's maiden name, dob, pob, and pod are also unknown - she may have died between 1850 and 1860. Enoch may have then gone on to marry Mary (?). It appears that Enoch and Julia had a daughter Sarah A. (b. abt 1847, d. 4/2/1873, buried Old Fallsburgh Cemetery).

There may be some connection between the DENNISTON and PURVIS families and the families of CHILDS and WHITTAKER.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
