Had four sons: Robert, John H., Joseph E., Frank J. Left Smithville abt 1881 for Buffalo, NY, and then about 1891 to Central Manhattan. STITES

Simon Parker Wed Jun 9 00:53:13 2004
I am a descendant of Dr. John STITES and he appears on the "Early settlers - Norwich" page of the Chenango Co. web page :- http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nychenan/nwh1784h.htm as follows :-

"about 1791 or '2
Matthew GRAVES, Hatfield Mass,
Martin TAYLOR, Mass,
Colonel William MONROE, Windsor, Conn
Leonard M CUTTING of New York bought the township when it was up for sale. He tried to lease the lands and opposition so violent and great he finally sold township to Dr. John STITES of Elizabeth, N.J., and Anthony LAMB, of New York who finally sold to settlers."

I am interested to find out where the deed records for this record/period are held. As Chenango records only start in 1798 I presume it is in one of the Counties Chenango was formed from, possibly Tioga.

Unfortunately Sandy Goodspeed who posted the info can't help. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks & regards from down under.

HART

Have recently obtained information pertaining to one of my paternal grandfather's (Jesse E. HART) family members.

In 1958, one of his nephews, Corey Kenneth HART and his family were living in Mariposa, Chenango County, NY. As I'm not familiar with the many small towns/villages contained in this county, I would like to ask the readers of this website if someone might know exactly what part of the county this town is located. What other towns is it near and is it still even in existance??? What route/road is it located near??

I have a NYS map but apparently this little village/town is so small that it's not even listed/shown on the map. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thank you.
